Solar Panels in Enfield: Costs, Planning, and Local Advice

Enfield is one of Greater London's most spacious boroughs, stretching from Edmonton in the south to the Green Belt boundary at Crews Hill in the north. The northern half in particular offers the kind of property that makes solar a strong proposition: sizeable detached and semi-detached houses with generous roof areas, clear southern aspects, and relatively few planning complications.

Solar in Enfield

Housing in Enfield spans from Victorian terraces in Edmonton and Lower Edmonton to 1930s semis across Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, and Southgate, and larger detached properties north of Enfield Town toward Forty Hill and Clay Hill.

Typical system sizes:

  • Victorian terraced (Edmonton/Ponders End): 3–4 kWp (7–9 panels)
  • Edwardian/interwar semi (Palmers Green/Winchmore Hill): 4–5 kWp (9–11 panels)
  • Detached (Enfield Chase/Grange Park): 5–7 kWp
  • Larger rural-edge detached (Crews Hill/Forty Hill): 6–8 kWp, or ground-mounted on larger plots

The semi-detached properties of Winchmore Hill and Southgate are particularly well suited — good pitch, often south-facing, and enough roof space for a 4–5 kWp system that delivers strong self-consumption.

Costs and savings

Installation costs in Enfield are broadly in line with outer north London — slightly below inner London, and competitive nationally.

System sizeTypical installed costTypical annual generation
3 kWp£4,800–5,800~2,700–3,000 kWh
4 kWp£6,000–7,500~3,400–4,000 kWh
5 kWp£7,500–9,000~4,250–5,000 kWh

Prices include 0% VAT on supply-and-install, valid to 31 March 2027.

Property values in Enfield range from more modest terraces in Edmonton (around £350,000–450,000) to substantial detached properties in Winchmore Hill, Grange Park, and Forty Hill that can exceed £800,000. The higher the property value, the larger the absolute return from solar's typical 4–8% uplift. For a £700,000 detached home, that could mean £28,000–56,000 in added value.

Planning in Enfield

Most Enfield properties can install solar under permitted development rights without planning permission, provided panels do not protrude more than 0.2 m from the roof surface and the property is not listed.

Conservation areas in Enfield: Enfield Town, Bush Hill Park, Winchmore Hill Green, Forty Hill, Chase Farm, and Cockfosters are among the borough's many designated conservation areas. The standard rule applies: panels on roof slopes visible from the highway require a planning application; rear-roof panels are usually still permitted development.

Forty Hill and Enfield Chase have notable heritage significance. The area around Forty Hall (a Grade I listed building) warrants particular care — check with Enfield Council's planning team if your property is in proximity.

Use the Planning Portal interactive map or Enfield Council's planning search to verify your property's status before proceeding.

Local schemes

Enfield Council has distributed Warm Homes Local Grant funding for energy efficiency improvements, targeting households with lower EPC ratings. Contact Enfield Council's environment and climate action team for the latest availability.

The national ECO4 scheme (to December 2026) and the emerging Warm Homes Plan apply to eligible Enfield households. ECO4 is income-tested and requires qualifying heating measures alongside solar.

Green Belt edge properties: think bigger

Properties in Crews Hill, Forty Hill, and the rural northern fringe of Enfield often have larger plots than their address might suggest. If you have significant south-facing land as well as a large roof, it is worth asking an installer whether a ground-mounted supplementary system makes sense. Ground-mounted panels can be optimally angled and are independent of roof suitability.
