Solar Panels in Hounslow: Costs, Planning, and Local Advice

Hounslow is a west London borough defined by its proximity to Heathrow Airport and the Great West Road corridor. It is home to a diverse mix of housing: Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Chiswick, Brentford, and Isleworth; interwar semis in Feltham and Hanworth; and a significant number of modern estates and post-war council-built properties. The majority of owner-occupied housing in the borough is technically suitable for solar.

Solar in Hounslow

The housing in Hounslow is predominantly low-rise residential, which is ideal from a shading perspective. Chiswick and Isleworth have particularly attractive Edwardian terraces, while Feltham and Hanworth are dominated by larger semis and detached properties from the interwar and post-war periods.

Typical system sizes:

  • Victorian/Edwardian terraced (Chiswick/Brentford/Isleworth): 3–4 kWp (7–9 panels)
  • 1930s semi-detached (Feltham/Hanworth): 4–5 kWp (9–11 panels)
  • Modern estate terraced or semi: 3–4 kWp

A note on Heathrow: Properties in the flight path experience noise, but this has no bearing on solar panel planning permission. Heathrow proximity does not trigger any special restrictions on permitted development for solar installations.

Costs and savings

Hounslow installation costs are in the middle of the outer-London range.

System sizeTypical installed costTypical annual generation
3 kWp£4,800–6,000~2,700–3,000 kWh
4 kWp£6,200–7,500~3,400–4,000 kWh
5 kWp£7,500–9,000~4,250–5,000 kWh

Prices include 0% VAT on supply-and-install, valid to 31 March 2027.

Property values in Hounslow vary significantly — Chiswick properties regularly exceed £700,000–900,000, while Feltham and Hanworth offer more accessible values around £350,000–500,000. Solar adds proportionally more in absolute value to higher-priced properties: a 4–8% uplift on a £800,000 Chiswick terraced house is a very different figure to the same percentage on a £400,000 Feltham semi.

Planning in Hounslow

Most Hounslow properties can install solar under permitted development rights without planning permission, subject to the standard conditions.

Bedford Park conservation area: Bedford Park, located on the Hounslow/Ealing boundary around Turnham Green, is one of Britain's best-preserved planned Victorian suburbs. It is a designated conservation area and carries significant design expectations. Panels visible from the highway within Bedford Park require a planning application. If you are in Bedford Park, contact Hounslow Council's conservation team for pre-application advice.

Other conservation areas: Chiswick Mall, Strand-on-the-Green, Isleworth Village, and Brentford have designated conservation areas. Rear-roof installations are generally still permitted development even within these areas.

Local schemes

Hounslow Council has participated in Warm Homes Local Grant distribution. Contact Hounslow Council's sustainability team for current funding availability for eligible households.

The national ECO4 scheme (to December 2026) and the emerging Warm Homes Plan also apply. ECO4 requires qualifying heating measures alongside solar and is income-tested.

Chiswick terraces: check the rear roof orientation early

Chiswick's Victorian street grid runs in various directions. Many properties have rear roofs that face south or south-west — ideal for solar. But streets running roughly east–west will have north-facing rear roofs. Use a compass app or Google Maps' satellite view to check orientation before contacting installers; it will help you get more accurate quotes from the outset.
